Junk Food Plays Tricks On The Mind

New research has shown that the bad fats found in dairy products, hamburgers and milk shakes quickly make their way to the brain where they turn off the alarm system that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat. The result is that our hunger is not satisfied and therefore we continue to eat more.
Worryingly researchers believe that this effect is so powerful that a cheeseburger eaten on Friday could be responsible for hunger pains three days later!
Dr Deborah Clegg who conducted the investigation said “Normally, our body is primed to say when we’ve had enough, but that doesn’t always happen when we’re eating something good. What we’ve shown in this study is that someone’s entire brain chemistry can change in a very short period of time. Since you’re not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat.”
Scientists carried out the study on mice and rats and found that the effect lasted for three days. This means that unhealthy and fatty foods can increase appetite and calorie intake for days after you eat them.
The study was published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation; Scientists said that a particular type of fat called palmitic acid is especially good at tricking the brain.
This type of fat is a common saturated fat found in popular everyday items such as butter, cheese, milk and beef. In better news the fats found in olive oil were given a clean bill of health.
Researchers now plan to investigate how long it takes the body’s appetite to return to normal.
Genetics also play a part in our appetite for fatty, sugary foods. Almost two-thirds of people in the UK carry ‘junk food genes’ that causes them to yearn for fatty and sugary foods previous studies have shown.
The UK leads the way as the biggest consumers of junk food, even beating people from the United States.
