Rimonabant
Rimonabant is a pharmaceutically produced medical drug used for the treatment of obesity. It is not natural or herbal but is made up of pharmaceutically produced chemicals. It works as an appetite suppressant and has been marketed in Europe under the name Acomplia by pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis. In the US it was to be marketed under the name Zimulti - however, the FDA has still not approved it.
(In India, Rimonabant is marketed under the following names: Bethin, Monaslim, Remonabent, Riobant, Slimona and Rimoslim.)
Rimonabant (Acomplia) has now been suspended in the UK because of concerns that it promoted the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis.
Side Effects
Rimonabant is a relatively new anti-obesity drug that came to the UK market in 2006. However, in October 2008 the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) released a press release stating that the benefits of Rimonabant no longer outweighed its risks and subsequently recommended that the product be suspended from the UK market. It has now been suspended in the UK. This is because independent studies showed that Rimonabant promoted the development of neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system such as Multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease in persons that are susceptible. There were also reports of severe depression among users.
How It Works
Rimonabant is a CB1 endocannabinoid receptor antagonist. The endocannabinoid system is in the part of the brain that regulates metabolism, energy levels and appetite.
Rimonabant prevents the endogenous cannabinoid binding to CB1 receptors in nerve cells. These CB1 receptors, when activated, stimulate appetite. Hence this drug blocks the activation of these CB1 receptors and thus reduces appetite.
Alternatives to Rimonabant (Acomplia and Zimulti)
Rimonabant has now been removed from the UK market and although it has not been approved by the FDA in the US, it is available to buy online. Zimulti is being sold illegally through the black market. I strongly recommend that you DO NOT buy it. The fact that it can lead to degenerative diseases such as Multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer is surely a good enough reason to keep anyone away. It is not worth risking your health when there are safer alternatives out there such as Hoodia Gordonni - an effective, herbal, all-natural appetite suppressant
Proactol - a well known fat binder - also acts as an effective appetite suppressant.
